Planning to travel to Mexico for business? The following checklist outlines the main steps to consider when preparing for a business visit or visa process.
1. See if you need a visa
If the purpose of your visit is to explore business opportunities, such as meeting with potential customers or partners, interviewing consultants, or looking for office space, and you plan to stay less than 180 days in Mexico, you will likely only need a visitor visa.
Many nationalities are exempt from the visa requirement, such as Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Check the website of the National Institute of Immigration to confirm whether your nationality is exempt.
If your plan is to stay longer than 180 days or work in Mexico, you will need a resident visa, even if you are normally exempt.
2. Prepare ahead of time
Start making arrangements at least three months before your planned trip.
Visa processing times depend on the schedule and policies of your nearest Mexican consulate, so contact them in advance to ask about waiting times.
3. Visit a Mexican consulate
Visit your nearest Mexican consulate to learn the particular aspects of the visa process in your local office.
Although immigration rules apply worldwide, each consulate may have different policies, schedules, and procedures.
If you cannot visit in person, check their website or call to ask about appointment requirements.
Most appointments are scheduled through the MiConsulado platform, but your local office may have additional requirements.
If you cannot reach them by phone, send an email. They typically reply with useful information.
4. Organize your documents and paperwork
Most consulate websites list the minimum documentation required for the visa interview.
Bring additional supporting documentation beyond the minimum requirements.
For example, if proof of employment is required, you could also bring a company presentation and contact information for directors or managers.
Consulates verify the information you provide, so additional documentation can help them validate your data more easily.
